Thornton Elementary celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

In the art room at Thornton Elementary School, third graders were busy getting ready for the big event tonight, putting the finishing touches on their Mexican carpets. Their artwork will be on display at the Thornton Elementary Hispanic Heritage celebration.

Alexandra was already ready.

鈥淭his is the shirt I鈥檓 going to wear tonight,鈥 she said proudly about her beautiful red blouse.

She鈥檚 planning to compete in the Hispanic clothing competition.

鈥淚t鈥檚 going to be huge,鈥 Thornton principal Alicia Rodriguez said about tonight鈥檚 celebration for students and their families.

The event will include Sam Houston High School鈥檚 mariachi and Ballet Folklorico, tamales and enchiladas, the dress contest, an el grito contest, lots of Hispanic-inspired artwork and student performances.

鈥淭he vast majority of our students are Hispanic 鈥 not just from Mexico, but also El Salvador, Columbia, Puerto Rico, Honduras and Guatemala,鈥 Rodriguez said. 鈥淲e want to make them feel special 鈥 and it鈥檚 a time for learning.鈥

The learning has been going on all week as students have learned a song and dance in music and studied Hispanic culture in other classes.

鈥淲e talked about Mexican rugs and where they come from and the shapes, patterns and colors,鈥 said art teacher Alysson Nava. 鈥淚t鈥檚 important for them to see representations of their culture in art.鈥

The inspiration for the colors in Jackelyn鈥檚 carpet was from a little closer to home.

鈥淚 have five cats,鈥 she said. 鈥淪ome of them are black and some of them are gray.鈥
